Royal Greenwich Is a friendly independent and privately run club which aims to promote fencing by making it more accessible. We specifically put an emphasis on having fun fencing and offer a local venue with a relaxed atmosphere.
Here, people of all ages from eight to sixty-five or more can fence, or for the first time try their hand at fencing. Learning and fencing at their own pace, for fun, and we welcome existing fencers and competitive level fencers. Anyone wishing to hone their skills against new opponents, for training and for fun, is welcome.
We are a non-profit organisation and plough all our fees back into the club. We are affiliated to the BFA and our coaches are all BFA qualified. Fees include the use by our members of both the basic fencing equipment required to train with, and electric equipment to fight with.
Please be aware that attendance at the Club is by prior arrangement only
Children’s Holiday Fencing Courses
Royal Greenwich runs fencing courses for children aged 7-16 years old, these take place over two hours a day for five days.
Children are taught all they need to know in order to fence and will be equipped with all the basic fencing safety equipment required, and when ready to fence, the corresponding electric equipment.
Students will take part in fencing matches using electric fencing equipment and scoring apparatus and will be taught the conventions of fencing in a competition, and how to preside over, judge and run a fencing bout and pool.
The cost of the Children’s Holiday Fencing Courses is just £60.00 per person for the week.
Limited places available, please use the above email for details.
The Beginners Courses
Both Junior and Adult beginners’ courses are run over ten weeks (one term), in which time the beginner is kitted out with the basic fencing safety equipment and taught to fence with one of the three fencing weapons (Foil, Epee or Sabre).
The course will comprise how to advance and retire on the piste, make explosive and accelerating lunges, simple and compound attacks, and varieties of defence.
How to preside over, judge and run a fencing bout and pool, the conventions of fencing in a competition, and will take part in fencing bouts using electrical equipment.
The Scouts Master at Arms Badge Course
This course is specifically for Scouts to qualify for their ‘Master at Arms’ badge and is run over six weeks, in which time they are kitted out with the basic fencing safety equipment and taught to fence with one of the three fencing weapons (Foil, Epee or Sabre).
The Juniors Club
The Juniors Club operates four terms a year and is where children and teenagers between the ages of eight and sixteen interested in learning to fence, or who already fence, can come learn and fence at their own pace, without any pressure - and importantly have fun doing so!
The weapons used in the Juniors Club are the Hungarian Sabre, French Epee and French Foil. The juniors also have available to them all the corresponding electric equipment for use with the electric Sabre, Foil and Epee.
The classes for junior fencers are held on Monday evenings, between 7 pm and 9 pm, in room 7 at Shrewsbury House.
The Adults Club
The Adults Club operates four terms a year, and is where adults over the age of seventeen, interested in learning to fence, or who already fence, can come to learn and fence at their own pace, without any pressure - and importantly have fun doing so!
The Adults Club offers fencers and beginners the opportunity to fence with all three weapons, the Hungarian Sabre, French Foil and French Epee. Most of the adult fencers usually fence two or three weapons and everyone has the chance of progressing to a new weapon, if they wish to. The adults also have available to them all the latest regulation corresponding electric equipment for use with the electric Sabre, Foil and Epee.
The classes for adult fencers are held on Thursday evenings, between 7:45 pm and 10 pm, in room 7 at Shrewsbury House.
The Club has an extensive range of 350N and 800N safety equipment available for use by its adult and junior members, with jackets and lames ranging in size from 32 to 52-inch chests, and while most fencers will want to acquire their own equipment eventually, we can supply all the items necessary for a beginner to start training and fighting.
However, we do ask that individuals dress appropriately and recommend the following:
Tracksuit or jogging trousers with zip, sewn up or no pockets
T-shirt (preferably crew-neck)
Trainers or squash shoes
The basic fencing safety equipment we provide is:
The Mask, (available in Small, Medium, Large & Extra Large)
The Under Plastron, for left or right handers (available in Junior, Small, Medium & Large)
The Fencing Jacket, for left or right handers (available from chest size 32-52)
The Glove, for left or right handers (available in Small, Medium & Large)
The Chest Protector, (available in various sizes, only for Women)
The weapons taught at the club are:
Epee, in the modern Hungarian style and using the classic French grip, which uses the characteristics of the thrust but not the convention of priority. Epee is the practice weapon for the Rapier, the preferred duelling weapon, and the second fencing weapon.
Sabre, in the modern Hungarian style, which uses the characteristics of the cut and the convention of priority. Sabre is the practice weapon for the military Sabre and the third fencing weapon.
Foil, in the classic French style of the mid twentieth century and using the classic French grip. This is the weapon generally taught to all new starters to introduce them to the characteristics of the thrust and convention of priority. Foil is the practice weapon for the Small Sword and the first fencing weapon.
All weapons are available in adult and junior sizes, for left and right handers, both steam and electric.
