May Newsletter

31 May 2018

Hooray for Hollywood? Well, to be honest, more likely Falconwood but we can dream. On Monday 4th June the House is being photographed, inside and out, for inclusion on the RBG Film Unit database. The photographer needs to see the House at its best so there may be a little disruption to normal working as we move furniture out of rooms. It'll be worth it the long run as this opens up a whole new area of income from film and TV companies who may want to use Shrewsbury House as a location.

Greenwich is one of the few local authorities that goes out of its way to facilitate filming. It's why, apart obviously from our stunning parks and buildings, you see so many glimpses of places you know in feature films and on television.

Congratulations!

As many of you will know (some may even have been there), Darren our Community Assistant Supervisor and Toni, his partner, got married here at Shrewsbury House last Monday 28th.

Given the recent variation in the weather they were fortunate to have a lovely, sunny day for the ceremony and I'm sure you'd want join in wishing them all the best for the future.

What more elections?

Not local or central government this time but Trustees for Shrewsbury House. As you'll know from the last newsletter, Abi Bralee and Patrick White have joined the Board as co-opted Trustees. We have since received an application to join the Board from Fiona Kemp which was accepted at the last meeting of Trustees. Fiona is a retired headteacher of a Greenwich Nursery School and Children's Centre.

"When I moved to Plumstead in October last year I was very aware of Shrewsbury House and its benefit to the local community. As I get to know the local area more I find I really love living here and intend to be a long term resident. I currently attend a drawing class, I plan to join an exercise group and am keen to be more involved in the running of the House... My experience as a headteacher provided me with what I believe are some significant skills in organising, leadership and working with communities and other bodies."

As you will know, co-opted Trustees give their knowledge and experience but cannot vote in Board meetings. There are eight vacancies for elected Trustees so we plan to hold elections within the next month at which the three co-opted members will stand for election along with anyone else who wishes to put themselves forward.

Getting yourself nominatedIf you would like to stand as a Trustee then please let us know by email to trustees@shrewsburyhouse.org (mailto:trustees@shrewsburyhouse.org ) or by leaving a note at reception. We'll get back to you with the full details of how to apply.

Are you a member?

Rember that since the last AGM anyone who uses Shrewsbury House can join as a member. It's free but you must fill in and return an application form. Only members can vote in elections for Trustees and ballot papers will only be issued to people who are on the membership list. If you haven't already done so, ask for an application form at reception.

New Faces

Don't panic. This isn't news that yet another old TV format is being dug up and recycled. You may, however, notice a few new faces amongst the staff on reception and helping around the building. Derek and Poppy have joined us as casual Community Assistants to help out during busy times or to cover when other staff are on leave.

User SurveyThank you to everyone who took the time to complete our recent user survey. The results have been very interesting and informative and will provide a useful guide to Trustees in planning future developments. The results of the survey will be published on our website very soon with printed copies available to read in the House.
